being a generational farm, It’s really a family affair and I think it does run a near blood. I am 1/6 generation dairy farmer. I farm full time with my mom and dad as well as my husband and our almost 11 month old daughter, Annabelle. And she just adores the animals and is not afraid of anything. She’ll like go right up to him. She’s not afraid, 95% of Wisconsin dairy farms are family owned. That happens because when kids grow up on the dairy farm, they learn from their parents and it instills this crazy work ethic of you work until the job gets done. You don’t work until 5:00 and you punch the clock and you go home at the end of the day. It’s something very unique and very different from a traditional career and I truly believe it is a lifestyle, not a career. Animal care is our number one priority on the farm. We are dedicated to our animals and they received 24/7 care 365 days a year. The keys to that are excellent cow comfort as well as excellent nutrition and I previously worked as a dairy nutritionist after college for 3.5 years. So I joke with people that these cows have their diet so dialed in, I’m jealous. I wish I had my own nutritionist many days. I have always had a passion for working with dairy cattle, but it took me an opportunity to work off the farm actually after college to realize that the farm was really where my heart was. It’s really fulfilling to be able to continue on the family tradition. I understand the challenges and the perseverance it’s taken for the generations before me. My hope is that one day our daughter Annabelle wants to take over the farm and we can provide that possibility for her. I had the opportunity to actually farm with my grandfather when I came home for the first couple years. He never said it, but I know he was extremely happy to know that the farm was going to continue on.
