Over 160k higher learning students staying on campus despite intake deferment, Parliament told

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 160,000 students from private and public higher learning institutions are still staying on campus despite the deferment of physical student intakes for the 2020/ 2021 session due to growing Covid-19 cases, says the Deputy Higher Education Minister.

Datuk Mansor Othman (pic) told the Dewan Rakyat that as at Nov 16, a total of 50,899 or 7.9% students in public higher learning institutions, polytechnic and community colleges were still staying on campus.

“Also, some 113,297 students from a total of 234 private higher learning institutions are still staying on campus despite the announcement to postpone physical intake registration for the 2020/2021 session,” he told Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun (Bersatu-Beaufort) during Question Time on Thursday (Nov 19).

Azizah had asked the Higher Education Ministry to reveal the numbers of students from the public and private higher learning institutions who are still studying on campus.

Mansor said the ministry was concerned and had given special consideration to students who were required to stay on campus.

“Among those who are given special consideration include those who require technical facilities such as lab facilities on campus and those who need a more conducive learning environment, or those who have limited access to the Internet to continue their teaching and learning online,” he said.

He also said that students would continue to have access to education during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Among our strategic responses for this is to provide access to 871 centres with Internet connectivity under the purview of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

“For students from the B40 group learning at public higher learning institutions, they will receive an Internet data plan.

“We also have provided a device aid scheme to more than 8,965 students from the B40 group.

“The ministry also had given a one-off RM50 to each new student in the 2020/2021 intake,” he said.
